Bio: Dr. Scannapieco is from the University of Buffalo, NY, and well known for his long-standing interest in the biology and clinical implications of dental plaque biofilm formation and its effects on oral and systemic diseases. He has over 30 years of research experience in oral health research, and been actively engaged in productive collaborations in the past to develop research projects pertinent to the proposed application.

Objectives: 

  1. Review the latest information on the connections between poor oral health and aspiration pneumonia, nosocomial-acquired pneumonia, especially ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and COPD.
  2. Review results from randomized trials that have tested the effects of the oral hygiene or periodontal therapy in the prevention of these conditions will be presented.
  3. Describe potential biological mechanisms involving the oral microflora and host response that influence lung disease.
  4. Translate practical applications of this information into everyday practice to prevent lung infections in vulnerable populations.

**At the conclusion of this presentation, participants may receive up to 1 continuing education credit hour for their professional certification or license renewal.
