Richard A. Proctor, MD, board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, is a Professor Emeritus in the Departments of Medicine and Medical Microbiology at the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison, and retired from Merck as the Global Director for Infectious Diseases for Antibiotics and Antifungals. While at Merck (2008-2010), he was involved in understanding the basic mechanisms of S. aureus vaccination. He received his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor in 1970 and completed an Internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Wisconsin. He served 3 years attached to the US Army Walter Reed Medical Research Unit, after which he completed a Residency in Internal Medicine at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and a Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Proctor continues an active consulting career for industry/universities/research funding agencies, collaborations at multiple Universities doing research on staphylococcal infections, giving lectures on infectious diseases, writing and reviewing manuscripts for journals, and service on scientific advisory boards for biotech companies.
