He studied chemistry as an undergraduate at Northwestern University\, was an organic chemist at a pharmaceutical company and then went on to graduate school in pharmacology at the University of Michigan. He began medical sch ool there\, finished it at the other U of M (in Minneapolis)\, and complet ed his dermatology residency at CU in Denver.
