BIRC Research Assistant Accepted into Dental School
Please congratulate Ms. Sara Engler who has been accepted to the School of Dentistry at University of Minnesota to pursue an exciting career in clinical dentistry. Sara will begin her first year of Dental school starting August of 2012. “I had absolutely no doubt in my mind that she would make it into the Dental School,” stated Sara’s supervisor and mentor Amit Acharya, PhD. Sara is currently a Dental Informatics Research Assistant at BIRC and also spent the summer with BIRC as a Dental Informatics Intern. Sara is expected to remain at BIRC through June 2012. “Although, the BIRC Dental Informatics team is going miss her, we remain excited that she will be close to Marshfield as we could explore future Dental Informatics collaboratory projects,” commented Acharya.

Marshfield Clinic Featured at National Conference for the Advancement of Digital Future of Healthcare
The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) featured Marshfield Clinic with a video titled “The Digital Future of Healthcare” at the annual conference in Washington DC, October 22-26, 2011.

MCRF Receives $1.1 Million from Delta Dental
Delta Dental of Wisconsin announced Monday, September 26th that its board of directors approved $1.1 million in funding for research projects at the Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation. Delta Dental committed $500,000 toward dental-informatics research, $500,000 toward the oral-and-systemic-health research project, and $100,000 toward clinician-initiated dental and craniofacial research through the Delta Dental Oral and Systemic Health Research Initiative Fund.

2010 Summer Intern Jennifer Ciske featured in Fall 2011 issue of BenchMarks
BenchMarks is the quarterly magazine published by Marshfield Clinic to acknowledge and recognize the many generous contributors who help the Clinic meet its mission. The magazine also highlights some of the research and education projects conducted by Marshfield Clinic, its Research Foundation and Division of Education.

Dental Research Initiative Stewardship Event a Success
Many local dentists from the ‘Dental Clinic of Marshfield’ attended the August 2nd stewardship event to learn about the dental research activities initiated at the Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation (MCRF). Presentations were provided by Amit Acharya, BDS, MS, PhD, Dental Informatics Scientist, Andrea Mahnke, Usability Analyst and Sara Engler, MCRF Dental Informatics Intern.

Governor Walker Visits MCRF
On July 12th Governor Scott Walker visited Marshfield Clinic to meet with clinic leaders and discuss the State’s priorities in health care delivery. An important part of the presentation to Gov. Walker was the role of our research program to the Marshfield Clinic.

Book Publication leads to an International, Marshfield Clinic, and MCRF Multi Center Collaboration
BIRC Tenure Track Scientist, Amit Acharya, BDS, MS, PhD was invited by Springer Verlag, UK in an international effort to edit a book volume on ‘Integration of Medical and Dental Care and Patient Data’.

BIRC’s Dental Informatics Scientist was invited to present at the Expert Panel on Quality Oral Health Care for Children in Medicaid through Health IT
National Opinion Research Center - January 19, 2011 - Meeting at National Opinion Research Center, University of Chicago, Bethesda, MD NORC at the University of Chicago, with their partner the Children’s Dental Health Project (CDHP), and under contract with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), lead an effort to identify whether and how health information technology (IT) and health IT incentive payments can be used as a tool to improve access to quality oral health care for children enrolled in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
