Marshfield Clinic Health System currently engages in multi-site research with collaborating institutions. MCHS IRB serves as the IRB of Record in some of those collaborations and MCHS IRB has also relied on the other institution's IRB to serve as the IRB of Record.
At the present time, multi-site research collaborations are not required to utilize one IRB of Record. However, the new revisions to the Common Rule, will require that for most federally-funded collaborative research projects located in the U.S. a single IRB (commercial, academic, or hospital-based) is to be designated
- Effective January 20, 2020
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is implementing a variation of the Single IRB-of -Record policy effective as of January 25, 2018. The NIH sIRB policy (link is external) applies to:
- NIH-sponsored multi-site studies, where the same protocol is used at multiple sites
- Domestic research only
