Sebold award nominations sought

Nominations are being accepted for the 29th Gwen D. Sebold Research Fellowship Award.

Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation (MCRF) and its Board of Trustees are accepting nominations for the award, given annually since 1988 to recognize an outstanding medical researcher and support continued research in his or her field. The recipient receives $5,000 and a memorial plaque presented by D. David “Dewey” Sebold in memory of his sister, Gwen.

Gwen grew up in Dorchester, about 30 miles north of Marshfield, and joined Marshfield Clinic as a medical stenographer in 1955. She died of cancer in July 1974.

This year's award will be presented at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, in the Froehlke Auditorium of the Laird Center. A reception will follow.

Eligibility:

All physicians, scientists, and staff actively engaged in research who have worked for the Clinic for at least three years are eligible. Previous recipients of the award also are eligible. Nominees must be employed by the Clinic at the time of the award ceremony.

Any physician, scientist or staff member may submit a nomination. Groups of individuals may collaborate to nominate a candidate.

Documentation required:

  1. All letters explaining why the nominee deserves the award should be addressed to Andy Keogh, chair, MCRF Board of Trustees. These documents should be routed to Jeanette Normington, MCRF Administration, 1R3, or emailed. Documents should be received by Friday, July 29.
  2. In the letter(s), address the originality, uniqueness and significance of the research. The research must primarily focus on human health issues and have contributed or have the potential to contribute to improving patient care or public health. Also, describe the researcher's reputation, achievements and involvement with collaborators from Marshfield Clinic and others nationally or internationally.
  3. A copy of the nominee's curriculum vitae (CV). If you have difficulty obtaining the CV, contact Normington by e-mail or at ext. 9-3140.

Selection of recipient:

MCRF’s Board of Trustees Executive Committee will review nominations and select the recipient in early September. The award decision is at the sole discretion of the Committee.
