There is great value in having a “National Action Plan” developed via broad consensus, with priorities for public- and private-sector funding and activities. The National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety directed development of the first National Action Plan, prompting the U.S. Congress to appropriate funding to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) earmarked for children and agricultural safety. The 1996 National Action Plan (NAP) has been updated three times through a consensus-driven process. Over the years, NIOSH requests for applications on childhood agricultural safety have referred researchers to address priorities noted in the action plans. The plans have also influenced private sector funding to not-for-profit organizations. The last iteration of a NAP was released in September 2025.
